Quick & beautiful Instagram quotes with Keynote
We use Apple's presentation app Keynote everywhere for everything.
It's a rockstar piece of software (free with every Mac) for building quality graphics—in this case, Instagram quotes. We love using this hack at the bottom end of our garden where the internet is too sketchy for Canva.
Set the slide size.
Click on Document Settings > Slide Size > Custom Slide Size... to resize your slide.
We prefer a square, as it shows up better on our grid, but you can set your slide to any size you want.
How many px in pts?
Since you're not a designing billboard ad, there's no need to get fancy with translating pixels to points. You can just add in the pixel values.
For example, using the recommended 1080 pts x 1080 pts for square posts delivers a resolution that looks good even on retina displays.
Set placeholder image.
If you started with an image slide, resize your image so it fills the entire slide. Make sure it's set as an media placeholder, so you can drag and drop images onto the slide.
Format > Advanced > Define As Media Placeholder
Set placeholder text.
Update the template's built in Quote and Attribution text styles. Click update, or redefine the style from your selection.
Keep in mind that the text needs to be visible on your Instagram grid. Zoom out to 25% to get an idea of how your slide will look on a much smaller screen.
Create your Instagram-ready quotes.
First duplicate your slide — there are three ways to do this:
- select slide, then copy + paste
- click + drag slide while holding the alt key
- right click on the slide thumbnail and select Duplicate.
Now you're ready to drop in your images and text, and customize each slide to perfection.
Export as images and post!
File > Export To > Images... Select high quality JPEGs and give your folder a name. Keynote will save each slide as an individual image.
Save your quote slide as a Keynote theme.
Start a new Keynote presentation.
Follow the steps outlined in Using Keynote as a Document Builder to create a blank Master Slide. Set the slide size to 1080 x 1080.
Copy and paste your quote slide design to the master slide. Remember to set all text and images as placeholder (Format > Advanced > Define as Media Placeholder). If you don't set objects as a placeholder, you will not be able to edit them outside Master mode.
Exit Master Slides and save as a theme. File > Save Theme > Add to Theme Chooser.
